Inequality in Riverside,Ca.

With the recent Occupy Wall Street movement gaining national and global recognition as well as the class lecture on rising inquality, I thought it would be interesting to compare income inequality in my hometown of Riverside, California. Using the latest census data estimates from the 2010 ACS, I constructed the Lorenz curve which I have posted above. From the graph it can be seen that in Riverside the poorest 50% of the population own about 20% of the income, while top 20% own about 50% of the income. Interestingly, the richest 3.5% of the population own roughly about 13% of the total income, while the poorest 6.4% earn less than .5% on the income. The Gini Coefficient was calculated to be .41. Clearly, for what ever reason it may be, whether good or bad, it can be seen that there is unequal income distribution in Riverside, Ca.
