To crack down on illegal immigration or not?

In class we discussed how the border closure increased income equality because it decreased the supply of unskilled workers in the US workforce. This article asks whether cracking down on illegal immigration today would decrease unemployment. It is true that illegal immigrants are taking available jobs, but the reality is that most Americans do not even want the jobs that these immigrants have. A case study in Alabama shows that even as immigrants flee and leave jobs available, Americans are not rushing to take those jobs because they are not desirable jobs. The problem is not that there are not enough jobs, but there are not the right type of jobs that people want.
