The reason why the U.S. doesn't like giving to the needy

In class, we discussed why the U.S. has a smaller welfare state, so I thought this story was very interesting in supporting the behavioral reason why we don’t have a welfare state that similar to Europe’s. In this article, a Seattle women living in a million-dollar home was receiving welfare-type payments to pay for the house and their food. In addition, she received state and government disability checks. She has been receiving all this extra money since 2003. Also, her and husband, a chiropractor, travel around the world and give money to charity. Stories like these make people wonder where their tax dollars really go. This might add to the “reciprocal altruism” of the U.S.
