Narrowing the Income Gap in the U.S.

The "occupy" movement has proven that people are fed up with the large income gap between the top 1% of earners and the rest of the nation. Christian Weller, an Economist at the Center for American Institute, believes that that government should create more economic opportunities for middle-class Americans. Weller believes that past policies, such as tax cuts for rich families, have caused this large income gap. There are several things that policymakers can currently do to provide Americans with economic opportunitites. As Weller states, getting rid of tax cuts for top earners and getting rid of tax loopholes for corporations are two possible things that the U.S. can do. Another thing that the U.S. can do to help reduce the gap is to create new job opportunities. As long as the government is willing to create new economic programs/opportunites for middle-class Americans, and they gear away from programs that continue benefiting the top 1%, the United States can reduce the income gap.
