Jobs market: Men, hit hardest in recession, are getting work faster than women

During the current recession, data shows that men are being hit harder with layoffs than women. This can be attributed to the fact that men are over-represented in hard hit industries like construction and manufacturing. However, an article from the Washington Post also indicates that men are attempting to go outside traditional fields to get back into the workforce. For example, the author indicates that more men are applying for community college programs in nursing, a traditionally female-dominated field. Still, men still make up 56% of the unemployed and their unemployment rate is one percentage point above that of women.
