I read an article in the Economist called “Still struggling” which was written on November 25, 2011. The article talks about the inequality between men and women in the top positions of companies. For example, out of the Fortune 500 companies, only 3% of the CEOs are women. In terms of wage, the article describes women still get paid less than men for comparable work, even after a number of equal-pay legislation. The author even suggests that progress for women in the labor force may have stalled.
The article also discussed how the proportion of women in the workforce has risen from 48% in 1970 to 64% in 2010. This goes along with the class topic of women’s labor force participation and how the labor force participation of women grew rapidly from the mid 1970s to today.
